About Unlock PDF
The Unlock PDF tool removes password protection and editing restrictions from any PDF. Drop the file, click Unlock, and download an unprotected version — same content, no lock.
Two kinds of PDF lock, one tool. PDFs can be protected in two distinct ways. Owner-protected PDFs open fine in any viewer but block specific actions — printing, copying text, editing, filling forms, adding annotations. User-password PDFs refuse to open at all without the right password. This tool handles both: for owner protection, just drop the file and click Unlock — no password needed. For a user password, expand the optional password field and type in the password you already know.
What you’ll get back. A regular PDF, openable in any viewer, with all the restrictions stripped. The page content, fonts, images, and layout are unchanged — only the protection layer is removed. If your goal is to print a draft contract that someone sent with copy/print blocked, or to extract text from a permissions-locked report, this is the right tool.
What this tool will not do. We will not try to crack a password you don’t know. There’s no brute-force, no dictionary attack, no “try common passwords” — those crossed legal and ethical lines we’re not interested in crossing. If you’ve genuinely forgotten the password to your own PDF, recover it from the source rather than from us.
To stamp a draft or confidential watermark on the unlocked PDF, use Add Text Watermark to PDF or Add Image Watermark to PDF.
No watermark added by us. The unlocked PDF you download has only the original content — no branding, no “made with TheToolBus” stamp, no tracking. Free, no signup, no account.
Frequently asked questions
PDFs can have two layers of protection. **Owner (or permissions) protection** restricts what you can do — print, copy text, edit, fill forms, annotate — but the file opens without a password. **User password** protection blocks the file from opening at all without the right password. This tool removes the first kind with one click. For the second kind, you must enter the password you already know.
No — and we won't try to guess it. If a PDF won't open without a password, only the password holder can legitimately unlock it. We don't run brute-force or dictionary attacks. If you've forgotten a password to your own PDF, your best path is to recover it from the source (the original document, the email it was sent in, or the person who created it).
Your PDF is uploaded over HTTPS to a secure conversion service, processed in memory, and the unlocked output is returned via a time-limited download link. The link expires automatically and the file is deleted from the conversion service's storage. No signup, no account, and we don't keep your PDF after the conversion completes.
Up to 50 MB for the input PDF. Most password-protected PDFs are well under this — they're typically contracts, statements, or reports rather than image-heavy archives.
