Why convert AVIF to PNG instead of JPG?

PNG preserves transparency (the alpha channel) — JPG flattens it to a solid colour. PNG also uses lossless compression, so converting from AVIF to PNG doesn't add any compression artefacts on top of what AVIF already applied. Will the file be bigger?

Yes, usually significantly. AVIF is one of the most efficient image formats; PNG is one of the least. A typical conversion bloats the file 3–10×. That's the trade-off for guaranteed compatibility — every app on the planet reads PNG.

Is transparency preserved?
