About Word Unscrambler
The Word Unscrambler takes a set of letters and finds every valid English word that can be spelled using some or all of them. Results are grouped by length — longest words first — so the highest-value plays or best guesses are always at the top.
How it works
Type your scrambled letters into the input field (up to 20 letters). The tool loads a 270,000-word English dictionary on first use — this takes about 1–2 seconds and is cached for the rest of your session. Once loaded, every subsequent search is instant.
For each word in the dictionary, the tool checks whether that word can be formed from your available letters without using any letter more times than it appears in your input. So if your letters are SCARLBE, the word BRACERS works (one B, one R, one A, one C, one E, one R, one S — but you only have one R, so it wouldn’t), while CABLES does (one C, one A, one B, one L, one E, one S — all present).
Use cases
- Scrabble / Words With Friends — find the highest-value plays from your current rack of 7 letters
- Wordle — see all 5-letter words you can build from a set of confirmed letters
- Crosswords — given the letters you know belong in an answer, find what word fits
- Word jumbles — the classic newspaper puzzle where scrambled words need to be solved
- Learning — explore how many words are hiding in a single set of letters
Minimum word length
The default shows everything from 2 letters up. For Scrabble, setting the minimum to 5 or 6 removes the noise of common short words you probably already know. For word jumbles where the answer is a specific length, set the minimum to that length and only read the top group.
Dictionary size
The tool uses the an-array-of-english-words dictionary — approximately 270,000 words. This is intentionally broader than the Scrabble TWL (178K words) to avoid missing valid words. Some entries may be archaic or obscure; if a word seems unusual, verify it in a standard dictionary before playing it competitively.
All processing happens in your browser. No letters or results are sent to any server. Free, no signup.
Frequently asked questions
Type in your scrambled letters. The tool checks every word in a 270,000-word English dictionary to see which ones can be formed using only the letters you provided — without using any letter more times than it appears in your input. Results are grouped by word length, longest first.
Both. The unscrambler finds any valid word that can be formed from a subset of your letters. If you enter 7 letters, it finds 7-letter words, 6-letter words, 5-letter words, and so on — down to the minimum length you set.
The tool uses a broad English word list of ~270,000 words — larger than the standard TWL or SOWPODS Scrabble dictionaries, so it errs on the side of inclusion. Some rare or hyphenated words may appear. For official tournament play, verify results against the official word list.
Yes. If you know some letters in your Wordle guess and want to see what 5-letter words those letters can make, enter the letters and set the minimum length to 5. Only 5-letter possibilities will appear in the top group.
